A satirical video from India that sarcastically blames women for the rising number of rapes in the country has become viral online. The video, featuring Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin and television presenter Juhi Pandey, ridicules the controversial statements by public authorities on the brutal gang rape of a student in New Delhi in December.
\"It's Your Fault\" Viral Video
“Ladies, do you think rape is something men do out of a desire for control? Empowered of years of patriarchy? We cannot be misled by the notion that women are people, too. Because let’s face it, ladies, rape, it’s your fault,” a smiling Koechlin began in the video, which runs for a little over three and a half minutes.
“It’s Your Fault” is a video response to all “stupid and hateful remarks against women” every time there’s a sexual assault case in India, particularly after the rape of a 23-year-old student in December, which made headlines all over the world.
The young woman was gang-raped and brutally attacked on a bus by at least six men before she was thrown out of the moving vehicle naked with her companion. She was transported to Singapore for medical treatment, but had died two weeks later.
The crime has sparked protests in India and garnered outpouring of support from all over the world for the victim. But what made the crime even more despicable were the sexist comments made by some of the country’s authoritative figures, from politicians and police to spiritual gurus, in which they had blamed the victim for her rape.
“If you are tired of being humiliated by rape, you can always go to the cops and be humiliated by them instead,” uttered Koechlin in the clip.
The viral video has been viewed more than a million times since it was uploaded on YouTube on September 19. It shows Koechlin and Pandey both enthusiastically taking the blame for crimes against women.
“Scientific studies suggest that women who wear skirts are the leading cause of rape. Do you know why? Because men have eyes,” Koechlin continued, giving examples of “provocative” clothing that women wear, including a burqa, a raincoat, and a spacesuit.
“Notice the one thing that they all have in common? That’s right. All women!” Pandey said. “No women, no rape!”
A group of four stand-up comics – Tanmay Bhat, Gursimran Khamba, Rohan Joshi, and Ashish Shakya – produced the video, saying they wanted to change the “massive misconception” that it’s the women who invite rape.
“These are deep-rooted patriarchal biases. It happens everywhere in the world and in India especially so,” Bhat told AFP.
“We often see families disowning rape victims. We wanted to contribute positively to the conversation about the subject.”
The reaction by the online community to the video has been overwhelmingly positive that there were requests to dub the clip in other languages to reach a wider audience.
“Hopefully, we will have a Hindi version out soon and others will follow,” Koechlin was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying.
