Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has thrown himself in the line of fire by stating that the form of his three strikers over the remainder of the year may dissuade the Gunners from signing a frontman in January.
Olivier Giroud has been in brilliant form thus far for the north London club, scoring four goals in his first four games in the league. The Gunners are also looking forward to the return of Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo to the side and the Frenchman is hoping that the duo are able to remove some burden off the French striker, who has started in each of Arsenal's seven games thus far.
Wenger also brushed off talk about Wayne Rooney and said that he will assess his position in January and decide if they need any more players. The Gunners were linked with a move for the Manchester United man in the summer and are reportedly planning a renewed bid in the following transfer window.
"I don't know [if I would be interested in Rooney]. I was asked if I would be interested if he signs a new contract. I will wait now until December to see what we need in the squad. We spoke about Bendtner, Sanogo, Giroud. if the three do well, I am in no need to buy any striker, " Wenger said.
Wenger went on to suggest that Giroud has all the makings of a world class striker but he would like to keep his assessments till later in the season. The Frenchman also praised Bendtner and believes that the Dane has come around to his senses and will make a positive impact this season.
"He[Giroud] likes that. He is a positive guy, he has a positive charisma. He has a good physical basic stamina, and guys who have a good stamina recover, and can repeat again. Let's analyse that on a longer period [before we say he is among the best]. I think there is still a lot to come from him. I am convinced that this is an important season for him," Wenger told www.arsenal.com.
"It is a fantastic opportunity for him [Bendtner]. Honestly, he was supposed to go, but he stayed and once he stays you have to consider him as a full player of the squad. If he deserves to play in front of Giroud, he plays in front of Giroud. That is as simple as that. He lost his way a little bit, but he is not a bad boy. He is a good guy. He took the easy way a little bit but now he realises there are some [signals] in your career when players think that is the moment for them. He has got the message," he added.
