Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott has abolished the Climate Change Commission including Tim Flannery, internationally renowned climate change author and scientist. Mr Abbott, who once called scientific evidence of climate change as "absolute crap" removed the environmental agency on two days after he was officially sworn in as Prime Minister of Australia.
The move shocked environmentalists, scientists and the rest of the community. Among the developed nations in the world, Australia has one of the driest environment. The country is regarded as one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change.
Scientists have cited the floods and frequent bushfires in Australia as part of the visible patterns of climate change. Professor Tim Flannery once described the current climate of the world as a "climate on steroids" due to the record-breaking heatwave that has affected other countries in the world. Mr Flannery had warned of even more alarming temperatures in the future.
Christine Milne, leader of the Australian Greens, said that Mr. Abbott's decision to abolish the Climate Change Commission will be marked as a "black day" in the continuous fight against global warming. Ms Milne called Tony Abbott a "climate criminal" who used his position in Australia to demonstrate his disdain for climate science including the health and welfare of future generations.
The Coalition government's decision to abolish the environmental agency is part of its conservative efforts to streamline at what the new government thinks as a bloated bureaucracy.
Mr Flannery said there was no other organisation that was fulfilling the role of the climate change commission. Mr Abbott has previously acknowledged that climate change is real.
Aside from the Climate Change Commission, Tony Abbott also plans to abolish the Climate Change Authority and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.
The Climate Change Authority was established to provide the government with independent advice regarding carbon emissions while Clean Energy Finance helps provide private investment in renewable energy resources.
One of the election campaign promises of Tony Abbott was to repeal carbon tax on companies tagged as the big polluters. The carbon tax was introduced in Australia by former Prime Minister Julia Gillard from the Labour party.
