While the English pair definitely has the home-felt advantage, the pressure is on them to win after England’s other team, or England B (Daryl Peach and Chris Melling) prevailed in their opening match. Peach and Melling defeated Portugal's Manuel Gama and Guilherme Sousa.
Being the hosts, the home team is allowed to field in two teams in the World Cup of Pool.
Standing on the way of England A from joining their compatriots in the Round of 16 is the dangerous pair of Ricky Yang and Irsal Nasution from Indonesia. Both are pool veterans with rich international experiences, plus the South East Asian country has regularly qualified for the World Cup for a number of years now.
Meanwhile, Appleton and Boyes are two of the best players in the world. They are ranked 5th and 6th, respectively, in the World Pool-Billiard Association world rankings.
In the most recent major tournament they joined leading up to the World Cup, Appleton reached the second round of the World 9-Ball Championship, while Boyes made the final four in the same tournament held in Qatar.
Other matches on Wednesday include Taiwan’s Chang Jung-lin and Ko Pin-yi vs. Belgium’s Serge Das and Moritz Lauweryns; Greece’s Nick Ekonomopoulos and Alexander Kazakis vs. Australia’s James Delahunty and David Rothall; and Italy’s Fabio Petroni and Bruno Muratore vs. Spain’s David Alcaide and Juan Carlos Exposito.
