“Dexter” stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are more than just co-stars playing brother and sister on the hit show. They are also former husband and wife. And as the U.S. crime show is about to end, the two have opened up what’s it like to be working side by side with a ex-spouse on set.
Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter have finalized their divorce, a year and a half after the couple initially split.
For many ex-couples, it’s not only awkward to work with their former partner, but also unthinkable. But for Michael and Jennifer, they might not have a choice but to do so.
They’re both the main characters of the show, and have been playing their roles since the show’s premiere in 2006. Michael plays the title character, while Jennifer plays his adoptive sister and co-worker Debra. And sometime between their filming schedules, they fell in love with each other and got married on Dec 31, 2008.
But the show, which is set to air its final episode on September 22, proved to be more resilient than their marriage. Their divorce was finalised in December of 2011.
Naturally, fans were curious about how the co-stars handle their work life now that their personal lives together have ended. At the Farewell to Dexter event at the Paley Centre for Media in Los Angeles, one of the burning questions was “How was it working together after divorce?”
“It’s gratifying, honestly,” Michael replied, as quoted by eonline.com. “The fact that Jennifer and I worked through whatever was going on with us personally in the way we did and maintained our commitment to telling this story was never in question. It was always what we needed and wanted to do.”
Jennifer, on the other hand, was more emotional and less vague about her answer than Michael.
“I feel like marriage is a sort of like a generic label. Our marriage didn’t look like anyone else’s. And our divorce didn’t either. So, I’ve said it before and we’ve said it before. Just because the marriage ended doesn’t mean the love did. It’s an awkward thing to talk about your personal life in front of a bunch of strangers, but there’s nothing but love and respect. Nothing.”
So there you have it. Michael and Jennifer are two professionals who are committed to playing their roles and have nothing but respect for each other even after their marriage ended. Their answer, according to eonline.com, had the audience erupting in applause.
Meanwhile, Jennifer put an end to the rumour that she will be doing a Deb spin-off.
“I think I have played Deb from start to finish,” she said. But when executive producer Sara Colleton teased, “Anything is possible,” Jennifer was resolute in saying, “No.”
