WBC and WBA Light Middleweight titlist Saul 'Canelo Alvarez' easily shed two pounds from his natural weight of 154 pounds to make the catch-weight stipulation of his mega-buck fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, Canelo's pre-fight success went more than making the 152-pound catch-weight. Little did everybody know, Boxing's newest poster boy can also make a statement - at least on the weighing podium.
Mayweather vs. Alvarez
On the eve of the much awaited fight of the year, Canelo eased all the tensions surrounding him ahead of the weigh in by making the catch-weight as he tipped the scales at 152 pound. Mayweather, who claimed he already reached 154-pound a week before the slugfest, weighed in at a much lighter 150 ½ pounds.
During the pre-fight press conference on Wednesday, Canelo accused the five-division world champion of manipulating the fight by forcing him to accept the 152-pound catchweight stipulation. The Mexican also revealed that Money's team even tried to book the fight at 147 pounds, which he believed very impossible to do.
"They wanted me to go to 147," Alvarez said earlier this week when he said he was already down to 154 pounds. "I said that was physically impossible. Then they wanted 150 and then 151. I wanted to make the fight so I agreed to 152. Then they forced me to be quiet about it," Canelo said during the press conference
Mayweather's representative, Leonard Ellerbe, quickly defended his client and explained they only used the catch-weight stipulation to take advantage of Mayweather's A-side status.
"They're the ones who said they would fight at a lower weight," Ellerbe said during the press conference. "We can't help it Alvarez has idiots for managers, but we're going to take every advantage they give us."
With the war of word between the two camps all but a thing of history, Mayweather and Canelo are all set for what could be the most electrifying boxing match in history. 'The One' has already shattered several records, including gate receipts, and is expected to break more boundaries when PPV revenue is announced next week.
Of course, before the firecrackers start popping on Saturday, Canelo left with a resounding message at Friday's weight in - 'I was born ready.'
