Samsung has overtaken Apple in the latest world Internet usage report. StatCounter has released data that reveals Samsung gaining leadership in mobile Internet browsing. While Apple continues to maintain its leadership as the most popular brand in mobile browsing, Samsung has caught up with Apple and took the lead in South America and Europe.
The South Korean tech giant has strong showing even in mobile markets where Apple has been always ahead. According to StatCounter's data, Samsung accounted for 26.59 per cent of mobile Internet use worldwide while Apple Inc had 23.39 per cent.
New Zealand smartphone and tablet usage
New Zealand's smartphone and tablet penetration continues to increase based on the results of the latest ConsumerLab analysis.
The number of smartphone users who browse the Internet has increased to 60 per cent which is significantly higher compared to 32 per cent in 2012. Tablet usage in New Zealand also went up 20 per cent from 7 per cent in 2012. Based on consumer interest data, New Zealand's smartphone penetration may increase to 63 per cent and 35 per cen when 2013 ends.
Ericsson New Zealand has released the results of the analysis revealing tablet and smartphone ownership, preferences and usage. Aside from making voice calls and sending SMS, New Zealanders are more interested in Internet browsing, instant messaging and mobile apps.
New Zealanders are in line with global trends in terms of tablet usage with 66 per cent of Kiwis using tablets to browse the Internet, 58 per cent send emails and 53 per cent play games. Ericsson New Zealand's strategic marketing manager Warren Chaisatien said there is significant potential that one in three New Zealanders will own a tablet by the end of the year.
Sixty seven per cent of New Zealanders use their tablets mostly at home in the evenings. Kiwis who use tablets while watching television make up 52 per cent while 50 per cent of New Zealanders use tablets before sleeping. For those considering to buy their first tablet, potential consumers in New Zealand cite top three reasons for buying: convenience, portability and connectivity.
Current statistics show that 1 in 6 New Zealanders both own a smartphone and a tablet.
