Akshay Thakur (28), Vinay Sharma (20), Pawan Gupta (19) and Mukesh (26), the four accused, are expected to be face a death sentence to be announced on Wednesday. One of the accused, Ram Singh, who was a juvenile, was previously tried in a juvenile court and sentenced to 3 years stay in a correctional home. However, during the trial, Singh was found dead in his cell.
The accused committed the infamous gang rape on December 16, 2012 in New Delhi. The victim, 23, was a physiotherapy intern who was brutally raped and later died due to injuries she sustained from the incident. The gang rape caused nation-wide uproar and even made it to global headlines.
Yogesh Khanna, the additional sessions judge, described the brutal incident when the "defenceless" young lady was raped by six eople one by one. The heinous event included inserting hands and iron rods into the abdominal cavity. Judge Khanna stated that a significant part of the intestine of the young girl had been pulled out of her body.
Judge Khanna announced that the accused people had been charged for murder and gang rape of the victim. He added that they were also charged of attempt to murder, common intention, conspiracy, kidnapping and destruction of evidence. Judge Khanna further informed that the victim was dangerously and sufficiently injured by the accused, which was enough to cause her death.
The detailed judgment consists of 237 pages. It took less than 9 months since the horrific incident to finalise the judgment. The trial may be considered a relatively swift one as the Indian judicial system is often accused of sluggish pace.
