Photos and stories of two major Philippine celebrities became viral on Tuesday night as the two, presidential sister Kris Aquino and eight-division boxing champ Manny Pacquiao were forced to ride the public rail system due to the severe traffic caused by the early evening rainfall.
Gridlock in the national capital region of the Philippine is notorious, but the heavy downpour late Tuesday afternoon worsened the already very bad traffic situation in Metro Manila. Netizens posted their traffic woes in Facebook as vehicles came to a standstill or crept very slow that appointments were cancelled.
Aquino, a TV host and actress, and sister of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, had to take the MRT that runs along EDSA to reach a short film awards event.
The photo of her riding the MRT became viral on Twitter and Instagram which she herself posted. The public transport ride is likely a first for the multimillionaire who had been born to the rich Cojuangco and Aquino clans and has many luxury vehicles to ferry her from one appointment to another.
It is the same situation with boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, who although born poor and surely have rode on jeeps, buses, tricycles and trains until a few years ago, who has the latest model luxury cars.
But rain and traffic being the great leveler, Pacquiao and his group left their vehicle on EDSA and rode at the MRT station in Ayala and got off at the Kamuning-GMA station which was few kilometers away from ABS-CBN where he was attending a Christian fellowship. The boxer and his men had to walk a few minutes to reach their destination.
Some MRT riders tweeted their experience of sharing the same crowded coach with Pacquiao.
Some MRT riders commended Pacquiao for taking the MRT so he could deliver his scheduled talk at the ABS-CBN Christian Fellowship.
Others said the MRT ride of the two celebrities is a red flag for transport officials to do something about the suffering Metro Manila commuters and motorists go through every day.
There was once a proposal for public officials, who are ferried in their government-provided vehicles, to ride public transportation once a month, but it seems even in that brainless proposal, celebrities have beaten them to the experience.
Facebook best captured the growing anger of Metro Manila commuters and travelers which was what author Dan Brown described in his book Inferno as the gateway to hell.
Here are some samples of their road rage.
