Arsene Wenger is set to offer new contracts to his top players this summer after smashing their transfer record in favour of German talisman Mesut Ozil, according to the Daily Mail. The Gunners paid a record £42m for the 24-year-old's signature, making him the second costliest signing in the Premier League and also the costliest German ever in the history of the game.
Per Mertesacker, Tomas Rosicky and Bacary Sagna are the three players who have been earmarked for extension with both Rosicky's and Sagna's contracts set to expire in 2014. Wenger is also looking to tie down Mertesacker, whose contract expires in 2015 and allow him a marginal increase in wages which currently stands at £80,000 a week. The big German has had a calming effect on Arsenal's defence since his arrival from Werder Bremen and also played a part in convincing Ozil to join the Gunners.
Rosicky, who signed a two year extension with the Gunners in 2012, has proved his worth in the last couple of seasons and has stated a desire to end his career in north London. Sagna has been intertwined in a long drawn battle with the club regarding his contract and was set to leave this summer after refusing to accept a 12 month extension. However, Wenger's insistence has borne fruit and the Frenchman is now ready to secure his future with the Gunners.
Mustafa Ozil on Mesut
Mesut Ozil's father Mustafa has revealed that Arsene Wenger was the main reason behind the 24-year-old's switch to north London. The German completed a deadline day move to the Emirates and his father believes that his talent can propel Arsenal to greater things.
"He[Wenger] was one of the deciding persons to convince us. It's also very helpful that he speaks German well. But that's not all. He also told us about his plans with the team and especially with Mesut. He wants him to play a big role in midfield. Arsenal is a very big club. The club tried hard to sign Mesut and he has a great perspective there. Mesut wants to help the club to bring in some silverware. We appreciate the interest of such a big coach like Arsène Wenger," Mustafa told www.arsenal.com.
