Greg Boyed is leaving “Seven Sharp.” The New Zealand presenter has announced his decision on the light current affairs evening show, saying he will return to the more convention late-night show “Tonight.”
Greg Boyed announces exit from Seven Sharp
“This Friday I’m hopping off the ‘Seven Sharp’ bus and hitting back to the wide world of news,” Boyed announced on the show on Wednesday.
He jokingly added that “if nothing else,” he had learned that there were four chords in the song “10 Guitars” and not three in his time on the show.
He is the first presenter to exit the 7 pm show after its premiere in February, leaving co-hosts Alison Mau and Jesse Mulligan to carry on.
“Greg has enjoyed his time on ‘Seven Sharp’ but feels most at home working on ‘Tonight,’” TVNZ head of news and current affairs John Gillespie told Fairfax NZ News. “He wants to acknowledge the great team of people he has worked with on the show, in particular, his two colleagues Ali Mau and Jesse Mulligan.
“I respect Greg’s decision and understand that this move is the right fit for him.”
The ratings-challenged and critically-panned current affairs programme will be sticking with a three-presenter format. It is still looking for Boyed’s replacement, but a “raft of familiar faces” would join the two remaining hosts, the network’s publicist Nicole Wood told the NZ Herald.
Interestingly enough, a Facebook page dedicated to “freeing” Boyed from “Seven Sharp” has been created in the same month that the show debuted on air.
“The horror of seeing a decent broadcaster reduced to these antics was just too much,” the Free Greg Boyed page reads.
Fortunately for the group’s members, which has just 64 likes, they now have something to celebrate after months of propagating their cause.
