Fans of the Half-Life series have been keeping vigilant watch since the last episodic installment, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, was released way back in 2007.
This year, the only piece of news circulating about Half-Life 3 had been one that caused immense heartbreak followed by immense elation for some fans. Several sources have reported that John Patrick Lowrie, voice actor for Half-Life 2 character Odessa Cubbage, had commented on his blog that Half-Life 3 was not in development.
But following the report, he immediately retracted his words, softening them from a hard and definitive "No" to a more unsure answer.
"What I was trying to say before (and failed) is that whatever Gabe Newell has to say about a project is the best info you're going to get. He owns the company and knows what's going on," he said in a statement to CVG. "Sorry that I gave the wrong impression that I know what's going on. I really wasn't trying to and I really don't know."
At least one project related to the Half-Life series seems to be progressing. Earlier this year, J.J. Abrams (known for his works Armageddon, Alias, and Star Trek: Into Darkness), has already confirmed that he is working on both Half-Life and Portal, both games hailing from Valve.
"We are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas," said Abrams to Polygon.
"Our goal here is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script--just treat it with the respect they treat their games and their players with."
But perhaps the lack of news--and the sudden retracting of a definite "No" has started a new movement for those who have been looking forward to the game. From using the ultimate meme from Boromir to a bunch of hilarious other nods to Valve co-founder Gabe Newell, check out these funny memes for Half-Life 3.
Possibly what all Half-Life series fans and followers have been chanting with bated breath all of these years--to keep believing that for a miracle, if it takes aliens to do it and so be it.
When Valve level designer John Guthre had confirmed that Half-Life 3 will be releasing for the current-gen consoles, next-gen PS4 and Xbox One conosoles, and even the PC and MAC, only to for Valve to shoot the hope down, fans were not happy. So the possible response from fans is clearly written on (and around) the face of Boromir of The Lord of the Rings: One does not simply confirm Half-Life 3!
Ever imagine what happens in the boardroom of Valve? This may just be it. Any mention of Half-Life 3 and you meet gravity.
It seems that people are already too used to every possible leak and conspiracy theory about the future of the Half-Life series that supposed hints like the one above, what can seem to be a Half-Life 3, is turned into a joke Alf Life 3. Perhaps as a way to just laugh about the situation.
On the subject of conspiracy theories, there are a lot of humorous ones. Of those related to when the next installment will come, it seems like fans will not see Half-Life 3 for a long (life)time.
And perhaps what most fans could relate to in the most basic of ways. If only Half-Life 3 existed, there is already a space for it waiting, both in their devices and their minds.
