Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo have both publicly expressed shock over the sale of Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil to Arsenal after the midfielder sealed a move to north London in the last hours of the summer transfer window.
Ozil's contributions to the Madrid side since joining in 2010 have been integral, with the side reaching the Champions League semi final in each of the seasons he played as well as pushing, and taking out Barcelona on one ocassion, for the La Liga title.
While the 24 year old insisted last week he would definitely stay at Madrid amongst rumours of a possible move to Arsenal or Manchester United, it seemed the Spanish giants were willing to sacrifice the Germany international in their pursuit of Tottenham superstar Gareth Bale.
And Ramos could not help let his feelings be known over the sale, insisting that the side have lost a very important player this summer.
"If it were up to me, he would be one of the last players to leave Madrid," he told AS.
"But he has made that decision and so have the club. It's a personal choice and he decides his future. Everyone chooses what's best for them and he's free to do what he wants. I'm not annoyed that he has left, but I am sad about it.
"He was certainly a friend and teammate like no-one else. He is a brilliant footballer, a unique player, and there was always a very good understanding between me and him. It's a shame."
Ronaldo, who has reportedly expressed his dissatisfaction with the signing of Bale who will certainly present competition in the wing position for the Portugal international, also claimed it is a real shame that Ozil will no longer be with the side.
"Ozil's departure is very bad news for me," he said to the Spanish paper. "He was the player who knew my moves in front of goal the best.
"I'm angry about Ozil leaving."
Arsenal's acquisition of Ozil was certainly a turning point for Arsene Wenger, with fans venting their anger at the manager's lack of spending this summer. The Gunners tripled their transfer record in order to land the attacking midfielder and it seems that Wenger was finally willing to spend big in order to create a squad capable of doing more than qualifying for Champions League football.
