Arsenal are reportedly considering an audacious swoop for Real Madrid midfielder duo Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria.
The Gunners are yet to spend any money in the transfer market so far this summer, despite pundits and supporters criticising the club for their lack of ambition. Arsene Wenger recently promised he would make some signings before the window shuts next week and, according to the Telegraph, the Frenchman is now weighing up a £60m move for the Meringues pair.
The report suggests Madrid are open to selling both Ozil and di Maria, if they are successful in their pursuit of long-time target and Tottenham winger Gareth Bale, as they will be forced to balance the books after pulling off what would be a new world record transfer deal.
Arsenal's priority this summer has been to recruit a high-profile forward but it is understood that if much sought-after players like Ozil and di Maria are available, Wenger would chose to recruit them as an alternative way of improving his attack and drop his search for an out-and-out striker.
The Gunners already have the in-form Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski for the centre forward position, while Theo Walcott - who currently operates on the flanks - will also become a viable option for the role, if either Ozil or di Maria - if not both - join the ranks at the Emirates.
Di Maria is already believed to be willing to move to Arsenal, with the north London outfit edging closer to securing qualification to the Champions League once again. Meanwhile, Ozil is concerned about his role at the Bernabeu, after the arrival of Spanish prodigy Isco and the potential signing of Bale. The Germany international had stormed off the tunnel in the match against Granada on Sunday, when he was taken off to introduce Brazilian youngster Casemiro.
Meanwhile, the Mirror reports Madrid would also consider selling striker Karim Benzema, alongside Ozil and di Maria, if they manage to land Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, after wrapping up a deal for Bale.
Benzema, di Maria, Ozil and Newcastle's Yohan Cabaye have all been linked to Arsenal for sometime now but Wenger has once again refused to name his targets when he was asked about transfers in his most recent press conference.
"I can't tell you that. I will not give you any names because it would be unfair on the players who play at the clubs. It might create some wrong hope," the Frenchman said.
