Ricky Martin is one person girls secretly wish was not gay. The Latin singer himself was quite confused about his sexuality and has confessed that he even made fun of and bullied gay people.
"The Voice" judge told GQ Australia magazine in a recent interview that he was not very comfortable with gay people until 2010 and bullied them as he was struggling to accept his sexuality at that time. Martin also confessed to the GQ magazine's Australia edition that when he looked at gay men he never wanted to be like one of them.
“The Voice” judge told GQ Australia magazine in a recent interview that he was not very comfortable with gay people until 2010 and bullied them as he was struggling to accept his sexuality at that time. Martin also confessed to the GQ magazine’s Australia edition that when he looked at gay men he never wanted to be like one of them.
"I was very angry, very rebellious. I used to look at gay men and think, I'm not like that, I don't want to be like that, that's not me. I was ashamed," Ricky told the magazine. "When you're told you're wrong by everyone, from society, from your faith - my self-esteem was crushed. I took my anger out on those around me."
But destiny had other plans and the 41-year-old singer came to terms with his impending sexuality in 2010 when he proudly accepted that he was gay.
"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am," the singer wrote in a blog post on his website back in 2010.
Talking about the confusing times, the Latin crooner says that he was suffering from "internalized homophobia" back then.
"I look back now and realize I would bully people who I knew were gay. I had internalized homophobia. To realize that was confronting to me," he added. "I wanted to get away from that."
The "Living la vida loca" singer, who is now a judge on the Australia's singing reality show, says he love doing it and is enjoying his time in Australia.
"I love the honesty and the truth. People tell it like it is in Australia."
The Puerto Rican singer is now blessed with twin boys, Matteo and Valentino, born by a surrogate mother in 2008 and has openly confessed to pubic that he is in a committed relationship with stock broker Carlos González Abella.
