Tottenham Hotspur's rampant summer spending is set to continue as reports suggest they have convinced Steaua Bucharest to part with defender Vlad Chiriches at the second time of asking.
The Romanian centre half appeared poised to make a move to White Hart Lane for a fee in the region of €8m last month until Steaua owner Gigi Becali pulled the plug on the deal, instructing his club to abandon negotiations from his prison cell, where he is currently serving a three year sentence.
But Romanian outlet ProSport report the Steaua owner has relented in his attempt to hold onto the Romania international, leaving Tottenham on the brink of completing the transfer having struck a deal with the club for a second time this summer.
It is reported that it was Tottenham's method of payment that proved to be one of the detrimental issues that led to previous negotiations for 23-year-old Chiriches breaking down, along with the Premier League side's refusal to wait until after Steaua's Champions League qualifier with Dinamo Tbilisi to complete the deal.
ProSport suggest the club's previous offer of €8m was one that saw payments staggered until the summer of 2015, one met with disdain by Becali.
A reviewed offer of €4m upfront followed by another payment of €4m in January has seemingly satisfied Steaua's outspoken owner who is reportedly ready to sanction a deal before the closure of the transfer window in just under two weeks.
In an added twist, Chiriches pulled out of the Steaua squad ahead of their Champions League qualifier with Legia Warszawa on Wednesday. The club's official line was that the centre half suffered a hip injury, but his withdrawal coinciding with reports of an accepted bid for his services suggests there may be something more.
Tottenham's initial attempts to snare Chiriches followed the club's decision to sell Steven Caulker to Cardiff City. Although Andre Villas-Boas has formidable options of Jan Vertonghen, Younes Kaboul and Michael Dawson at his disposal, the Portuguese coach may still be looking to fill the squad space left by the young English centre half.
The arrival of the Romanian defender could be one of many at White Hart Lane before the end of the transfer window, with Tottenham still avidly looking to add to their ranks.
Roma forward Erik Lamela remains heavily linked with a €30m move to the club while a number of reports suggest Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao will join Spurs this summer. Brazilian midfielder Willian has passed a medical ahead of a proposed move from Anzhi Makhachkala, although Chelsea have made a late attempt to hijack the move.
