Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has dampened expectations for the coming season by underlining that his team are not title contenders yet. Spurs are being tipped to do well this season following the acquisition of several top-quality players.
"I don't agree that we can be title contenders for this season because everything is happening, everything is changing," Villas-Boas told Goal.com.
In his second season in charge, the Portuguese manager has an entirely new look to his team. The club have spent over €100 million in buying Willian, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, and Etienne Capoue. They are also heavily linked with AS Roma forward Erik Lamela.
Although the team cannot challenge for the title at present, Villas-Boas believes it has the potential to do so in the future.
"We have to create a team from all these new players that we have bought," he explained. "We haven't had lots of time to work with them. I believe that, in the future, we can definitely achieve it."
Villas-Boas earned worldwide recognition as a manager after winning four trophies in one season with FC Porto. When asked about the possibility of repeating the feat in England, the former Chelsea manager suggests it is very difficult.
"It is extremely difficult," he said. "It is something that can happen in the future. It could only be a dream to achieve it with Tottenham."
"Only a treble has been achieved in English football - Manchester United," he continued. "A quadruple has never happened. It's very difficult because of the demands of the Premier League along with the strong competitions such as the Europa League or Champions League."
In the recent history of the Premier League, Tottenham have often flattered to deceive. Under Harry Redknapp, the club were able to break into the top four but never cement their place in it. Villas-Boas believes he and the club are on the brink of something special, where Tottenham can finally be considered amongst the best teams in England.
"What we are building is a very, very strong side for the future alongside massive investment in the structures of the club so that dream can hopefully happen in a couple of years," he concluded.
