Jana, however, did not lose the battle before fighting like a champion for her life, as mentioned in the statement released by her sister and mother. Carol Clark released the statement on behalf of Jana's family. Clark, the spokeswoman of the hospital, said that Jana's family requested for privacy.
Jana was swimming up to 91 metres (100 yards) off the Palauea Beach situated in Makena. A shark chewed off Jana's right arm during this period. She started screaming after she had been bitten by the shark. A California school teacher jumped in after seeing blood in the water. Rick Moore, the 57-year-old teacher who rescued Jana, said that Jana kept on saying that she would die. Jana was wading through the sea of consciousness as she faced the trauma.
Jana had been in a critical condition since Monday, said Clark. The species of the shark that attacked Jana is yet to be known. State officials went for the investigation at the spot but did not manage to find a single person who witnessed the deadly animal.
Jutta Lutteropp - Jana's mother and Julia - her sister mentioned in their statement that the young lady who could have survived the shark attack was a strong and beautiful young woman. She was always seen laughing. Jana is going to be remembered as a lively young lady, they added. Her family wishes for people to donate to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation in the memory of Jana.
The support that the family received from the community was appreciable. Numerous kind people conveyed thoughts and prayer for Jana from Germany and the rest of the world. The family thanked everyone from the center who had been supportive to Jana and her family.
