Liverpool are considering a move to sign Internacional striker and long term Tottenham target Leandro Damiao, according to the Mirror. The 24-year-old was close to join the north London club in January and his failure to join Spurs has seen Andre Villas-Boas' side linked with a move for him during the summer transfer window.
The Reds have added four new faces to their squad and in the meantime have allowed a few of their players make an exit from Anfield this summer. This has left Liverpool with a budget to make a marquee signing before transfer deadline day.
Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on bringing Damiao's compatriot and Anzhi Makhachkala winger Willian. However, the Telegraph reports Spurs are set to hijack the move and bring the former Shakhtar Donetsk player to White Hart Lane.
With Liverpool losing ground in their approach in signing Willian, the Northern Irishman has set his sights on Damiao to bolster his side's attack. The Mirror claims Damiao is eyeing for a switch to Europe and the former Swansea manager is still looking to add another attacker to the squad to increase his side's chances of finishing in the top four.
The Reds striker Luis Suarez has been linked with a move away from the Merseyside club, with Arsenal long been interested in his signature. However, Rodgers confirmed that the unhappy striker's situation at Anfield has been resolved as the Uruguayan international has agreed to continue with the Reds.
Meanwhile, Liverpool kick-started their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stoke City. Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of the game while the Reds' stopper Simon Mignolet was impressive throughout the game and made a crucial save from the spot kick at the end.
The former Chelsea man hailed Mignolet's heroics, which helped the Reds seal their first three points of the season.
"I want to credit the goalkeeper as well for such a great save; that's what won us the game, it wasn't my goal. It's great to be part of a winning team, that's the most important thing. I'm not crediting myself for the win today, I'm crediting Simon Mignolet for the save," Sturridge told Liverpool's official website.
