Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been named the sexiest vegetarian celebrities in the world by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).

Bell and Shepard beat off the likes of Anne Hathaway, Portia de Rossi, Bill Clinton and Peter Dinklage to claim the title.

This is the first time a couple has won the annual accolade, which has previously been awarded to Woody Harrelson, Russell Brand, Olivia Wilde, Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire and Andre 3000.

Bell, who was a vegetarian for years before becoming vegan, said: "I had a hard time disassociating the animals I cuddled with - dogs and cats, for example - from the animals on my plate, and I never really cared for the taste of meat. I always loved my Brussels sprouts."

Shepard, also a vegan, said his meat-free lifestyle helps with his looks: "I have fewer body aches. My skin looks better. I'm never starving, and I never need to ride the couch feeling completely full and disgusting."

Bell, 32, and Shepard, 38, had their first child together in March. Announcing the birth of their daughter Lincoln on Twitter, the latter said: "She has her mom's beauty and her dad's obsession with breasts. Hooray!"

The couple, who got engaged in January 2010, are now planning to wed after a US Supreme Court ruling that allows gay marriage.

They had delayed their wedding plans after saying they would not marry until their gay friends could.

After the Supreme Court struck down the Defence of Marriage Act (Doma), Bell tweeted her proposal to her fiancé, saying: "will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove"

Replying, Shepard said: "Doma is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let's bring my big, gay marriage to [Kristen Bell] to Life!!!!"
