Riddlesdown train station
A woman and child were killed when a train hit them at a station in London this morning (Friday).
Emergency services found the pair both dead beneath the train at Riddlesdown station, at the height of the morning rush-hour.
The station in Purley, south London, was closed by the incident and train services were suspended.
Commuters on board were locked in their carriages until about 10.10am, according to reports. Replacement bus services were put in place between Purley and Oxted.
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called just after 8.30am this morning to reports of two people under a train. Sadly a woman and child were dead at the scene."
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "The station has been temporarily closed while officers and medics deal with the incident.
"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances, and a file will be prepared for the Coroner."
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Iain Miller said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the woman and child involved in this tragic incident.
"Officers are continuing to work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, although early indications show that no one else was believed to have been involved."
