A six-year-old girl who died after falling into a canal in Kidderminsiter has been named by police as Imie Harrison.

Imie died after falling into the water in Springfield Park,  near the Wolverley Court Lock, with two friends. Her twin brother, who was playing nearby, raised the alarm.

Imie was in cardiac arrest when she was pulled out of the canal by a police officer and a member of the public.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said resuscitation was administered immediately and she was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital but died a short while later.

A girl and a boy, both aged six, got out of the water by themselves and were expected to make a full recovery after treatment for hypothermia.

The family of Imie are devastated by the girl's death, said police.

Supt Kevin Purcell, of West Mercia Police, said: "We are working hard to establish exactly how Imie came to be in the water."

Gail Quinton, director of children's services for the local authroity, said: "Worcestershire County Council's Children's Services are working very closely with the police to support the investigation and also the school to support pupils and staff at this very sad and difficult time."
