A close aide, ambassador and cousin of former Libyan dictator Mohammar Gaddafi has been arrested by Egyptian police, working alongside Interpol, in Cairo.

Ahmed Gadhaf al-Dam (literally the "ejaculator of blood") was holed up behind iron-barred doors and windows in his home located near the Zamalek neighbourhood in Cairo, on Tuesday morning.

Al-Dam attempted to escape firing gunshots against police officials who surrounded his home.

He defected to Egypt, where he still holds large investments, at the beginning of the Libyan revolution in 2011. The new Libyan administration has been demanding his return to face trial for alleged crimes against humanity during the Gaddafi ruling.
