Freezing temperatures and snow have continued to disrupt large parts of the country with the Met Office issuing yellow warnings for Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar, Orkney and Shetland, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, East Midlands, Northeast England, East and Southwest of England, Wales, and Yorkshire and Humber.
Snow showers are expected in northern and eastern Scotland and eastern coastal areas of England overnight through to Thursday morning.
The forecast says that cold winds will continue. Scotland may expect clearer weather after midnight although icy patches will persist.
"The public should be aware of the potential for minor disruption, especially to travel," the Met Office said.
Bad weather conditions have also swept across France and Belgium. The Channel Tunnel was closed, stranding hundreds of lorries on the M20 in Kent.
Eurostar, which was cancelled for most of Tuesday because of the extreme weather, has resumed services on Wednesday, although there are still delays of up to 60 minutes.
After 20 hours in rough seas off the French coast, 500 passengers on an Irish Ferries vessel were finally able to dock on the fifth attempt.
