The incident began with Balman arguing with the referees. Petron assistant coach Biboy Ravanes and swingman Ronald Tubid attempted to help Balkman regain his composure, but the American pushed them both aside. Eventually Santos confronted his teammate, and he found Balkman;s hands around his neck.
Mico Halili of GMA news was at the game, and claimed those in attendance were shocked by Balman;s actions.
“Has to be one of the strangest things I've ever seen during a basketball game,” tweeted Halili. “Complete meltdown by Balkman.”
Balkman was a marginal NBA player in his six-year career. He played for both the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets, averaging 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
The 28-year-old had led the Blaze Boosters to five straight wins, before the fight. Balkman was struggling when he lost control, scoring just six points on the night.
