Google's is about to lay off 10 percent, nearly 1,200, staffs of its workforce at Motorola Mobility in a bid to return to profitability, Wall Street Journal has reported Friday.

The latest layoffs come on top of the 4,000 jobs cut at Motorola last August.

Employees were told in an email that, "our costs are too high, we're operating in markets where we're not competitive and we're losing money".  According to the email, employees in the United States, China and India are expected to be affected by this layoff.

"These cuts are a continuation of the reductions we announced last summer," spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said in an email to Reuters.

"It's obviously very hard for the employees concerned, and we are committed to helping them through this difficult transition," she added.

Google acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in May 2012 aiming to dominate the smartphone market with it Android platform and about 17,000 valuable patents by Motorola's portfolio.

Commenting on the Motorola's products pipeline recently, Google's Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President, Patick Pichette said Motorola's products pipeline are "not really to the standards that what Google would say is wow - innovative, transformative."

"We've inherited 18 months of pipeline that we actually have to drain right now, while we're actually building the next wave of innovation and product lines. We have to go through this transition. These are not easy transitions," he added.
