Tottenham are hoping that a wage of £8 million per year will be enough to keep Gareth Bale, reports claim, with the winger going from strength to strength for the north London club as they target a Champions League spot.
Bale has scored in seven of Tottenham's last eight matches, taking his tally this season to 21 goals in 34 appearances for the club.
Having a relatively injury-free campaign has put Bale firmly on the radar for the likes of Real Madrid as well as rival Premier League clubs, but Spurs have continually insisted that they are hoping to keep hold of their prized possession.
And now the Mail is reporting that the club are getting ready to offer Bale a five year £40 million contract, granted they finish in the top four at the end of the season, to keep the Wales international committed and fight off interest from other sides.
Bale has admitted in the past that he would love to play Champions League football again, as Tottenham suffered from the emergence of Manchester City and finished outside the top four a season after qualifying for the first time in their history.
The next season was met with a cruel rejection from the European competition, as Tottenham blew a 10 point lead over Arsenal in the table to finish fourth, losing the final Champions League place to Chelsea when the sixth-place finishers won the trophy.
But this season looks to be different, and under the fresh management of Andre Villas-Boas Tottenham were able to topple Arsenal last weekend to claim third place and put a seven point-buffer between themselves and their cross-town rivals.
Without the contribution of Bale, this likely wouldn't have been possible, and with that in mind Tottenham are willing to do anything they can to keep the star at White Hart Lane.
The Champions League also promises a cash injection that would assist the club in providing Bale with the money he demands, and no fan would disagree that keeping the 23 year old can offer much more than any player in the news for a possible transfer.
