Apple has sold more than 8 million iPads to educational institutions globally while more than half of them were sold to schools in the U.S, according to multiple sources.

4.5 million iPads have been sold to education instructions in the United States, AllThingsD reported.
The iTunes U has become the standalone app for students to use the free educational content from top schools, prominent libraries, museums as well as organizations.
Apple has also shared details about the participation of education institutions in iTunes U. More than 1,200 universities and colleges as well as 1,200 K-12 grade schools and districts hosting over 2,500 public and thousands of private courses are available to enroll students globally on iTunes U.
Some course contents from big institutions such as Stanford University and The Open University have surpassed 60 million downloads.
Meanwhile, nearly 250,000 students have been enrolled for iTunes U related courses, 60 percent of which are outside the US.
Apple also highlights that over 100,000 students have enrolled on iTunes U General Chemistry course by Ohio State University's Matthew "Dr. Fus" Stoltzfus in the first year it was offered.
Apple has included popular courses like iOS development taught by Stanford University, a Psychology class on Understanding Happiness form TED Studies and course of Financial Markets by Yale University.
Back in June, San Diego's Unified School District had purchased 26,000 iPads to set up in 340 classrooms throughout its school system. Meanwhile the U.S. government has also funded some school districts for using the best technology available to help students learn.
