Canada last year has seen a record high number of international students pursuing their higher studies in the country.
Reaching the tally of foreign students to 104,777, Canada 2012 saw an increasing number of students-a 6.5% increase from 2011 and a 60% hike from 2004, according to the authorities.
"Last year was the first time in Canadian history that Canada has welcomed over 100,000 international students, an increase of 60% from 2004," noted the Canadian Immigration Department Tuesday.
Jason Kenney, the immigration minister said that attracting the best and brightest immigrants from across the world is part of the federal government's commitment to generate jobs and ensure long-term economic prosperity in the country.
"Attracting and retaining the best and brightest immigrants from around the world is part of the government's commitment to grow Canada's economy and ensure long-term prosperity," said Jason Kenney in a press release.
"The steady growth in numbers confirms that Canada remains a destination of choice for international students because of the remarkable educational opportunities that exist in our world class institutions," added Kenney.
The Head of the Canadian Association of Universities and Colleges, Paul Davidson said that the increasing number of international students could help the country to generate more jobs amid the global economic crisis.
Canada's universities are pleased to see increasing numbers of international students attracted by our reputation for excellence in education," said Paul Davidson in the release.
In addition to making a significant contribution to our economy, international students bring new perspectives and cultures to our campuses, enriching the learning experience of all students," said Davidson.
India was one of the top countries that have applied for immigration or higher studies in the country.
The minister said that around 130,000 visas were given to Indian immigrants and more than 13,000 study permits to the Indian students to study in Canada 2012.
While saying Canada is one of the favorable travel-destinations to the Indians, the minister vowed to attract more Indians in coming years.
"We are working with industry to welcome even more Indian travelers this year to create jobs and growth in Canada, while deepening our relationship with our Indian visitors," said Maxime Bernier, the Canadian tourism minister who is currently in India, promoting Canada as destination to the Indian travelers.
