Sony on Monday officially announced its new Xperia Tablet Z at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The company also claims it as the slimmest, lightest and water resistant tablet in the 10.1 inch tablet class.
The Xperia Tablet Z featurs the same OmniBalance design as the Xperia Z smartphone and is IP55 and IP57 certified waterproof which means the tablet can be kept under up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes.
The tablet is powered by a Qualcomm Smapdragon S4 Pro asynchronous Quad-Core processor with 1.5 clock speed paired with 2GB of RAM and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system. The tablet will get Android 4.2 update once it hits the stores.
It features a 10.1 inch HD WUXGA display at 1920 X 1200 pixels resolution along with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2. The company claims that the Mobile BRAVIA Engine technology will help to deliver enhanced color reproduction for a brilliant TV-like viewing experience on tablet.
"Xperia Tablet Z sets new standards in entertainment by matching premium specifications and Sony technology with cross-device connectivity and a consistent user-experience," said Kaz Tajima, Corporate Vice President, Head of UX Creative Design and Planning, at Sony Mobile Communications. "Xperia Tablet Z reinforces our intention to be a leading player in the premium Android device market, by building on the principles established by Xperia Z and perfectly optimising them for the tablet form factor."
The device also boasts an 8 megapixel primary camera with 'Exmor R for mobile' image sensor as well as a 2 megapixel HD front facing camera. It also comes with company's very own S-Force Front Surround 3D technology along with Sony Clear Audio+ mode and two built-in speakers to deliver amazing sound.
The tablet includes the Bettery STAMINA mode, which is Sony's unique battery management technology that significantly improves standby time. Furthermore, it comes with connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and One-Touch function, which allows transferring videos, images, audio and other contents among compatible devices.
The Sony Tablet Z comes with two memory variants; 16GB and 32GB and will be sold between $499 and $599 respectively in the U.S. market, and will hit globally in second quarter this year.
