Oscars 2013 Red Carpet: Best And Worst Dressed Celebrities On Hollywood’s Big Night [PHOTOS]

The world’s favorite leading ladies dressed to impress last night, pulling out all stops for the 2013 Oscars. As always, there were some hits and some misses in the eyes of fashion critics, but ultimately one stunner will go down in fashion history.
So which actresses and fashion trends were hits and which were misses Sunday night at the 85th Academy Awards?
Sparkles dominated the red carpet at the Oscars, with stars like Naomi Watts in a gunmetal grey sequined Giorgio Armani dress, Catherine-Zeta Jones in Zuhair Murad resembling an Oscar statue, Halle Berry in a geometric silver and black sequined Versace dress, Stacy Keibler in a gray Naeem Khan gown and Nicole Kidman in a black and gold L’Wren Scott dress. These girls sparkled inside and out, offering some shine to the otherwise dull red carpet.
But the ladies in white and shades of nude hit fashion homeruns with their gown choices. Big winner of the night Jennifer Lawrence, who scored the Best Actress Oscar, radiated in her Dior Haute Couture gown, and not just because of her big win. Even after her fall walking up the stairs to accept her award, no one could take their eyes off the 22-year-old actress. Or her backwards-hanging Chopard necklace. Please, don’t let this become a trend.
Other ladies who awed in white were Octavia Spencer in her go-to designer Tadashi Shoji, Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen and Charlize Theron in Dior Couture, in a strapless peplum gown slightly resembling Anne Hathaway’s from the 2013 Golden Globes. Speaking of copy cats, was it just me, or did Amy Adams’ Oscar de la Renta dress look quite similar to Zooey Deschanel’s Reem Acra gown at the 2013 Emmy Awards? Still, the red headed actress looked gorgeous with a simple updo and sparkly jewelry.
However, many leading ladies chose their go-to color for the night of black, like Adele in a sequined Jenny Packham gown and Salma Hayek in a gold collared Alexander McQueen dress. Samantha Barks, who donned an ultra-low V-cut dress by Valentino, stole everyone’s attention despite her small role in “Les Miserables.” Even more attention was garnered by Jenna Dewan-Tatum, whose daring choice to wear a tight black lace gown that showed off her pregnant belly, certainly deserved a nod.
The ladies in color were also some of the best dressed of the evening, like Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton, nine-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis in Giorgio Armani Junior toting around her usual puppy purse and Jennifer Hudson, who almost scored number one on our best dressed list, all in blue. Hudson, who performed her song “And I Am Tellin’ You” song from “Dreamgirls,” sparkled in a Roberto Cavalli gown that showcased her fit physique.
Then, of course, there was red but none of these actresses blended in with the red carpet. Kerry Washington again chose Miu Miu but this time a coral-hued gown with a beaded bodice and Olivia Munn, who wore a red Marchesa gown with gold embroidery and a draped front. Best of all the ladies in red was, hands down, red carpet veteran Sally Field, who looked age-appropriate and glamorous in Valentino, setting an example of how exactly Hollywood should dress.
Saving the best for last, the best dressed of the night goes to…Jessica Chastain, who showed up extra early to the Oscars red carpet in a Giorgio Armani dress. She even caught New York Magazine’s Fug Girls’ attention, who tweeted, “I bet Chastain came early because she's like, ‘I look awesome; might as well let everyone look at me for a FULL two hours.’” The sequins in her rose-toned gown complemented her beautiful ginger locks, done up like Veronica Lake, and oozed classic Hollywood glamour thanks to a bright red lip. Despite not winning the Oscar for Best Actress for “Zero Dark Thirty,” Chastain certainly scored the gold on the red carpet.
BEST DRESSED: JESSICA CHASTAIN IN GIORGIO ARMANI
Of course, not everyone could be the best dressed and many celebrities looked less than stellar for the 2013 Oscars, to say the least.
While we applaud her efforts to bring high street wear to the red carpet, Helen Hunt’s navy blue H&M gown looked wrinkled and untailored. The 49-year-old actress looked dazzling, as always, but the lack of steaming of her eco-friendly dress forced us to dub her in the worst dressed category.
Another miss of the night, who sadly also looked gorgeous from the décolletage up, was Zoe Saldanda. Her dress, designed by Alexis Mabille, had too much going on from the flowers on the chest, to the giant bow belt to the multi-colored train, leaving us with a slight case of dress ADHD which was further fueled by host Seth MacFarlane’s opening to the show.
Jane Fonda was the victim of a similar fashion no-no despite looking perfect in a form fitting dress. The 75-year-old actress wore a Valentino dress in the brightest shade of yellow, which hurt many peoples’ eyes, like the Huffington Post, which tweeted, “Jane Fonda in blinding yellow is, well, blinding us.”
Speaking of eyes, Renee Zellweger, who seems to have been squinting since “Empire Records” in 1995, was again squinting as she presented an award with the cast of “Chicago.” Perhaps her ultra-shiny dress by Carolina Herrera blinded her as the cameras flashed or maybe it was because, as rumor has it, she was allegedly a bit drunk.
Then there was perennially worst-dressed Helena Bonham Carter, who by comparison to past looks, looked less of a mess than usual in her Vivienne Westwood dress.
Upon mention of messes, no one can deny that Kristen Stewart and Melissa McCarthy both had sloppy hair for the occasion. Stewart, in Reem Acra, appeared to not have brushed her hair for the big night, maybe because her hands were occupied by the crutches she hobbled in on. McCarthy, wearing an ill-fitted bland gray David Meister dress, had the biggest hair of the night. I’ll leave the words to Derek Blasberg of Harper’s Bazaar, who tweeted, “Is there any hairspray left in all of LA after Melissa McCarthy’s Oscars coiffure? I hope not.”
Another non-surprise of the night was Jennifer Aniston, who looked mighty boring in her red Valentino gown, though we give her some props for donning a color instead of black and a larger skirt. But couldn’t she have done something to her hair? The Rachel was so 1994.
And the absolute worst of the night goes to one of the biggest winners, Anne Hathaway, who took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Fantine in “Les Miserables.” Her dress, almost a direct copy from Gwyneth Paltrow’s in 1991 when she won an Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love, not only didn’t fit, but resulted in a wardrobe malfunction for the actress. The darts of the pale pink gown, or glorified apron, by Prada were very prominent, leading many to believe Hathaway’s nipples were poking through the dress. The fashion faux pas even spawned a Twitter account poking fun – pun intended – at the actress. Perhaps it was because she, admittedly, hadn’t chosen a gown until three hours before the red carpet. Not to mention, once again, Hathaway didn’t bother to take a risk.
