It is no secret that Facebook has been working hard to include free calling on its iOS app for Apple users.

Recently, the social networking giant released an update (version 5.5) for its iOS app which enables the functionality of free calling through the Facebook app for Apple users.

Currently, the free calling option for friends using the app is only available for users in Canada and the United States.

The new version of Facebook update will also bring many changes, including the new button design to make it easy to like, comment and share posts. Free calling can be used over Wi-Fi or the existing data plan.

Facebook has made it very simple to call a friend using the app. Users just need to tap a friend's name and tap the "i" at the top and "Free Call". If the "Free Call" button is in gray color, it means the friend has not provided phone number to Facebook yet.

The app uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to make free calls. It uses the existing data connection on user's device or Wi-Fi connection (private or public).

The free calling function had previously been available on Facebook's standalone Messenger app for iOS. Earlier in January, Facebook rolled out the feature in the U.S. after a month's trail in Canada, according to Inside Facebook.
