A man named Fernando Gonzalez surrendered himself to police after a video of him beating up and using mace on a father, Derrick Dunn, and his six-year-old daughter was distributed by authorities.
According to the New York Daily News, 27-year-old Gonzalez went into a laundromat in the Bronx and beat up Dunn over a dispute involving laundry carts. After the brutal beating, Gonzalez reportedly maced the young girl and her 47-year-old father.
Police released video footage obtained from the laundromat on Monday, leading Gonzalez to turn himself in. He was charged with assault, authorities said.
As seen in the video, Gonzalez burst into the coin laundry facility on White Plains Rd. Saturday evening and started punching Dunn. At one point, Gonzalez is seen holding Dunn down and readying a bottle of mace before spraying the man and his six-year-old daughter.
The fire department told NY1 that two other people at the laundromat were sprayed with mace and were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
Authorities said Gonzalez’s girlfriend, whose name was not released, engaged in a fight with Dunn over using a laundry cart, leading Gonzalez to settle the dispute.
"It was really, really awful," witness Rita Ferguson told ABC. "The way he beat that man was horrible. He started spraying, we thought it was a gun or something.”
One of the witnesses, 11-year-old Star Mercer, said she had to go to the hospital after Gonzalez unleashed the mace.
"I inhaled it, I couldn't breathe," Mercer told ABC.
