Reports indicate at a Mexican girl who gave birth to a daughter two weeks ago and was thought to be nine-years-old is actually 12 or 13.

The girl, reportedly named Dafne became pregnant after sexual encounters with her 44-year-old step-father, according to Lino Gonzalez Corona, a spokesperson for the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office.

When news broke of her story, it was thought that a 17-year-old boy had impregnated the girl; the story detailed that the two has met at a local market.

Dafne’s mother told local authorities at the time that the boy had run away as was not accounted for, and was unaware of the sexual relationship between her daughter and her husband, ABC News reported.

The stepfather has been arrested and admitted to having sex with Dafne on two occasions, once in April 2012, and again in June. Dafne’s mother learned of her pregnancy in November 2012, two months before she gave birth Jan. 27.

Despite the revelation that Dafne is older than originally thought, doctors said that her young age made her delivery high risk.

"Due to her young age and to the fact that her body was not ready to give birth, the medical team decided a C-Section was the best option," Enrique Rabago, director of Zoquipan Hospital, said in a statement.

Reports said that Doctor Raymundo Serrano, chief of gynecology at Zoquipan Hospital, and his team decided to give the girl a contraceptive implant to avoid another pregnancy.

Dafne’s stepfather was investigated after it was alleged that he beat her often, shared baths with her and slept in the same bed with her on multiple occasions, IBTimes previously reported.

“What he has done has shamed our family," a relative of the stepfather told the Daily Mail. "I don't know why the girl's mother lets him carry on the way he has. They're both liars and I think it's terrible what has happened.

"Dafne is a child. She's just a child. The girl's mother is in love with him so she protects him, and this is what happens.”
