The 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu of late and has rarely played the full 90 minutes of a game this season. The report claims Madrid, who are having a nightmare domestic campaign, would like to move some of their out-of-favour and fringe players in the summer and di Maria is on the list.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been an ardent admirer of di Maria for several years and was chasing the Argentina international even before he joined Madrid from Benfica in a £22m deal in 2010. The Scot is understood to be prepared to spend in the summer and is now weighing up an approach for the Los Blancos winger.
Marca claims relations between di Maria and Real have worsened, following a contract renewal saga that stretched for six months and the La Liga giants are now open to selling the player at the end of the season.
The Argentine's contract with Madrid extends until 2018. The winger has made 34 appearances in all competitions for the Spaniards this season, notching six goals and six assists. The report says French club Paris St Germain (PSG) are also interested in his services.
Kagawa: Injuries Affected my Form
Meanwhile, United midfielder Shinji Kagawa expressed his frustration over his unimpressive first season in the Premier League but insists that injuries have prevented him from realising his full potential.
Kagawa joined the Red Devils last summer from Borussia Dortmund, after helping the Bundesliga outfit clinch the domestic double. However, the Japan international says the knee injury, which kept him sidelined for several months last year, has prevented him from making a bigger impression at Old Trafford.
"I'm not satisfied so far, but then I am always very critical of my own performances. Even worse, though, I got injured. I had to go through the frustrations that come with getting injured in my first season with the team. Now I'm just doing my best to catch up on what I have missed. I'm confident my hard work will pay off," Sky Sports quoted the 23-year-old as saying.
Kagawa has two goals and two assists to his name from 15 appearances for United.
