Perhaps one of the stranger stories from Wednesday’s National Signing Day came from a recruit who decided mother didn’t know best.
South Plantation High School senior running back Alex Collins decided to sign his letter of intent for the University of Arkansas, however his mother, Andrea McDonald not only refused to co-sign, she apparently ran off with the official paperwork. Collins needed a parent's signature on the letter besides his own.
McDonald apparently watched the live broadcast of her son’s decision on Fox Sports South announcing his intent to join the Razorbacks, was shocked by the choice, and has now hired an attorney from a firm originally founded by infamous former O.J. Simpson lawyer Johnny Cochran, according to the Miami Herald. McDonald reportedly wanted her son to play for the University of Miami.
Collins’ father, Johnny, apparently signed his son’s letter of intent, but McDonald’s hiring of legal counsel could turn the situation from anecdotal to litigious nightmare.
The 5’11 207-pound Collins was listed as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, and Scout.com went so far as to call him the No. 3 rusher in the country. Collins missed three games due to injury in his senior season, but managed to gain 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Steve Gorten of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Thursday via Twitter that Alex Collins had no idea his mother had hired an attorney.
"It wasn’t necessarily something that turned me off about Miami. I love Miami. It’s a great place,” Collins said to the Sun-Sentinel. “But I’m not making a decision for everyone else. I’m making a decision for me and I feel I should go to Arkansas."
With Collins, Arkansas has the 31st ranked recruting class of 2013, according to ESPN.
