Mozilla Foundation has taken the fight to the next level as it previewed two smartphones operating Firefox OS. The company has invited developers for its new open-source mobile operating system that will challenge both Android and iOS.

The phones are being offered from the small Spanish-based manufacturer GeeksPhone, and it is expected that this will start a series of low-cost smartphones to be sold around the world.

Mozilla Firefox made good impressions with its browsing experience and overall performance to users globally. The Firefox OS developers believe that the new smartphones will bring more power of the web to the mobile sector.

Keon is the dubbed name of the first Firefox OS phone and it is considered a budget smartphone.

  • 3.5-inch, 480x320 display
  • 1GHz single core Snapdragon S1 processor
  • 512 of RAM
  • 3MP rear camera unit
  • 4GB of internal storage
  • microSD card expansion slot
  • Wi-Fi ready
  • GPS
  • 3G and 2G bands full support
  • Light and Proximity Sensors
  • Accelerometer

Peak is the second Firefox OS smartphone and almost has the same specs as Keon.

  • 4.3-inch, 960x540 display
  • 8MP rear camera unit
  • Has front facing camera shooter
  • 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 4GB internal memory
  • microSD card expansion slot
  • Wi-Fi
  • GPS
  • 3G and 2G bands full support
  • Light & Proximity Sensors
  • Accelerometer

Both Keon and Peak are full SIM-unlocked and costs $100 and $150, respectively. Keon and Peak will receive OTA or over-the-air Firefox OS updates.

Even though these Firefox OS smartphones are not in the top-of-the-line classification, Mozilla aims to provide the enhanced web browsing experience not only to computers but also to mobile devices; and this kind of experience includes mobile Web apps created by developers.
