Roads hit by huge downpours

A man has died in Somerset as heavy wind and rain continues to cause flooding across Britain.

The victim was trapped in his 4x4 vehicle near the village of Chew Stoke on Thursday night after it got stuck under a bridge near a stream.

Rescue workers hauled him to safety but he died on the way to hospital.

Police were unable to remove the vehicle from the bridge due to the adverse conditions. Officers are still working to identify the victim.

The south west of England was worst hit by the weather, which caused flash floods across the region. Train services to London were cancelled and roads became treacherous for drivers.

Power cuts hit 2,500 homes in the region as high winds cut lines. Residents were forced to use sandbags in a bid to protect their property from millions of litres of gushing water.

More heavy rain was expected on Friday and over the weekend, posing the threat of further flooding with the sodden ground unable to absorb new rainfall.
