LIVE: Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool Premier League Coverage As It Happened
By Nick Howson | November 12, 2012 2:45 AM EST
- John Terry heads Chelsea in front after 21 minutes.
- Terry is replaced by Gary Cahil after a collision with Luis Suarez.
17:58: A game that never really fulfilled the pre-match billing. Chelsea deservedly hit the front through John Terry, but his departure with a bad leg injury led to a long stoppage in the first half. The second saw Chelsea spurn several chances, with Fernando Torres and John Obi Mikel the guilty party, before Liverpool for a leveller with 15 minutes left as Suarez headed in Jamie Carragher's flick. The reality is that Chelsea lose ground on leaders Manchester United and champions Manchester City, while Liverpool remain in 12th, but can take great credit after taking a point from a side expected to be there or there abouts at the end of the season.
Full time: Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool
17:55: Azpilicueta, a name thank goodness I have had to seldom write today, crosses and it goes through a crowd of bodies in te box and behind for a goal kick. Heading for a stalemate Im afraid.
17:52: Four minutes of added on time here. Not sure either side look like scoring to be honest. Cue a late winner......
17:50: Can recall Ivanovic scoring twice at Anfield against Liverpool in the Champions League a few years ago and he looks for another one here, but he heads over. Meanwhile, Suarez almost gets in behind, but Cech makes a crucial intervention.
17:46: Liverpool force their first genuine chance, bar the goal, of the game as Sterling gets away on the right, finds Suso in the box but the midfielder's coolness on the ball is lacking and Chelsea survive.
17:45: Fernando Torres is taken off with Daniel Sturridge coming on to the delight of the Liverpool fans. Seven minutes plus added on time for either side to find a winner.
17:40: Suarez almost gets in again but a combination of Ivanovic and Cahil clear. Initiative has totally changed in west London.
17:38: Victor Moses replaces Oscar with 14 minutes left for Chelsea. Not been the Brazilian's day.
17:35: What did I tell you? Liverpool win a corner and Carragher flicks the ball on at the near post and Suarez, who kept himself onside, has the simpliest of tasks to nod the ball beyond Cech. He can't keep him out of things can you? Chelsea made to pay for missing a succession of chances.
Goal: Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool (Luis Suarez)
17:32: The chances are raining down on the Liverpool goal and yet you feel that at 1-0 Liverpool may still have the last laugh. This time it's Ramires who finds himself in space and he shoots from 25 yards, but the ball soares over the bar.
17:30: Another chance for Chelsea and it comes from an unlikely source. Mata's teasing free-kick sees Jones flapping and Mikel is coming in on the back post but he can't make proper contact.
17:26: Torres came within a whisker of scoring his firsty goal against his former side. Mata splits the Liverpool defence and the Spanish international fails to get proper contact on the resutling cross. Liverpool continuing to live dangerously.
17:21: As Gerrard goes off after getting treatment, Suso replaces Sahin for Liverpool.
17:20: Few technical problems at IBTimes towers but we're back to see Chelsea miss another opportunity to go two up. Jones produces a brilliant save from Torres's flicked header, before Mikel totally miss-kicks from ten yards. Are Liverpool going to take advantage? Steven Gerrard currently receiving treatment
17:07: We're underway in the second half at Stamford Bridge. No changes to either side.
16:54: Two incidents involving the returning John Terry have dominated a largely disapointing affair at the Bridge. Terry netted the opening from a Mata corner, but has since been stretchered off after a collision with Luis Suarez. Mata shold have put Chelea two-up on the stroke of the break but shot over. Liverpool meanwhile have been pretty toothless in attack and looking exposed every time Chelsea have hit them on the break.
Half Time: Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool
16:51: Three Liverpool players go for the same header and Mata is played through, he gets himself in a shooting position but blazes over when he should have found the target. Chelsea's lead should have been doubled.
16:47: The long stoppage has worked to further disrupt a game which in truth had never got going this Sunday afternoon. Liverpool perhaps enjoying slightly more possession but Chelsea looking threatening on the break. Five added minutes at the end of the first half.
16:43: I can only imagine the abuse John Terry may be recieiving on Twitter at the moment. Remove the controvercy that has befallen him off the field in his career, he has been one of England's finest and most committed players of the last ten years, and no player deserves an injury such as the one he has suffered today. Let's hope for a quick return for the Chelsea captain.
16:41: Credit where credit's due, Suarez has hung around to ensure Terry is ok as he is stretchered from the field. That looks like a really nasty one for the 31 year old, who looks devastated. Cahill it is who replaces him.
16:38: John Terry collides with Luis Suarez and you can hear a scream of pain from the skipper. Suarez appears to lose balence and Terry's left leg buckles under the weight. You rarely see him in this much agony. The former England captain will be replaced by Gary Cahill after the fall. Totally accidental on the part of Suarez incidentally.
16:32: A Liverpool attack breaks down in its infancy, and Chelsea break with the pace and verve we've come to expect from them. Hazard tries to find Mata but the Spaniard can't latch onto the ball as Jones collects. Sahin then at the other end comes as close as any Liverpool has so far this afternoon, shooting wide from 22 yards.
16:29: Hazard has the batton now for Chelsea and he charges through the middle, feeds Torres in the inside let channel of the penalty area. His shot is parried by Jones but only as far as Hazard, who hits a volley wide with the Australian out of position.
16:27: Liverpool first decent spell of possession sees Joe Allen make a foray forward. The ball is eventually set up for Daniel Agger, who finds row Z wit his left-footed striker. Visitors haven't started in this one.
16:22: Fernando Torres helps win a Chelsea corner, which Juan Mata takes and finds an unmarked John Terry who heads brilliantly in at the near post. Great return for the skipper after four games out.
Goal: Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (John Terry)
16:20: Not really got going this one. Neither side really able to put their foot on the ball and dictate the ball. The opening 19 minutes summed up by a hopless effort from Branislav Invanovic which flies well wide.
16:15: From a Liverpool corner, Chelsea almost strike but the cross deflects of Agger and evades Ramires who was looking to strike on the edge of the box.
16:11: Torres seeing a lot of the ball and looking really at the races this afternoon. He picks the ball up in a deep position but loses control and Liverpool regain possession.
16:08: Liverpool mess up trying to get the ball out from the back, and Mata releases Oscar, who shoots ovr with his left foot. Mata has the chance to cross meanwhile, but it's overhit and The Reds breathe again.
16:07: No much to comment on thus far at the Bridge. Enrique's drifted cross, in towards Glen Johnson, who you will remember got the winner last season in the corresponding fixture last term, saw Petr Cech come out to punch.
16:02: Howard Webb is the man in the middle at Stamford Bridge. And after a naturally impeccably observed minutes' silence, he gets the game underway.
15:58: Very nice touch at Stamford Bridge before kick-off. Both sets of players form a guard of honour for serviceman on Remembrance Sunday. We'll have a minutes' silence before the game starts in west London and then we'll be ready to get going.
15:55: While Roberto Di Matteo's personnel might be different, they will revert to type with Ramires and Mikel playing between the back four and behind the three muscateers in Oscar, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard. As for Liverpool, the absence of Martin Skrtel means Brendan Rodgers has opted to go with a 5-3-2 formation, with Carragher, Agger and Wisdom playing as three centre backs, and Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique played as wing-backs. That should hand the likes of Steevn Gerrard slightly more licence to get forward to help support Luis Suarez.
15:50: Line ups:
Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Terry, Bertrand, Ramires, Mikel, Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Torres
Subs: Turnbull, Ferreira, Cahill, Romeu, Marin, Moses, Sturridge
Liverpool: Jones, Johnson, Enrique, Agger, Carragher, Wisdom, Allen, Gerrard, Sahin, Suarez, Sterling
Subs: Gulacsi, Cole, Assaidi, Henderson, Coates, Downing, Suso
15:45: These two have done battle in FA Cup finals, League Cup finals and Champions League semi-finals but today they Chelsea and Liverpool renew their domestic league rivalry at Stamford Bridge. Both suffered contrasting fortunes in mid-week, Chelsea requiring a last gasp Victor Moses goal to defeat Shakhtar Donetsk, while a young Liverpool side were beaten by Russian league leaders Anzhi.
Today sees Blues captain John Terry return to the starting eleven for the first time since being serving a four-match ban for racial abuse. He comes face-to-face with only other player in the Premier League to have been banned for such an offence; Luis Suarez, who amid all the controvercy surrounding him, gave us all a timely reminder as to his qualities with a brilliantly taken goal to grab a point at Newcastle United last week.
Chelsea have looked a little shaky during their home games, while Liverpool's best form in the league has come on the road this term. We have all the ingredients of another cracker.
