Superfast 4G mobile data services have finally arrived in the UK and, if are planning on upgrading to the faster network, it will necessitate a change of smartphone too.

EE opened its 4G network to the public last week, on 30 October while the spectrum auction by Ofcom will usher in services from the other mobile network operators by the middle of 2013.

With 4G finally up and running, the next question will be which is the best 4G smartphone, to take advantage of the higher speeds available.

So which one should you choose?

Here is our top eight selection of 4G smartphones currently available from HTC, Apple, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and T-Mobile.

The iPhone 5 will only work on EE's network as it only supports the 1800MHz frequency and not the 800MHz and 2.6GHz frequencies which will be used by Vodafone and O2 when they launch their networks next year.

Considering how popular the iPhone is, this is a huge boon for EE, and the Apple smartphone is sure to be one of the most popular 4G handsets on the market for the next six months.

One of HTC's flagship 4G smartphones, the EVO 4G comes with a 4.3in display with a resolution of 480 x 800, giving it a respectable pixel density of 217ppi.

The Evo 4G may never make it to this side of the Atlantic in its current incarnation, but it is still a damn fine smartphone.

More of an oddity among high-end smartphones these days, the Photon Q from Motorola features a full QWERTY keyboard, as well as a touchscreen.

The slide out QWERTY keyboard is accompanied by a qHD ColorBoost display and even includes a kickstand to help make watching films and TV all the easier.

Nokia's Lumia 920 has a large 4.5in screen with an HD resolution of 768 x 1280 and a pixel density of 332ppi. Around the back, the Lumia 920 has a sophisticated 8-megapixel camera with a 'floating lens' that allows for much improved image stability.

Powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, the Lumia 920 has 32GB of internal storage, but there is no microSD card slot to increase this if needed.

The Lumia 920 is available on contract from EE.

Launched by Google as the flagship device for Android 4.0 in 2011, the Galaxy Nexus proved hugely popular and Samsung has now launched an LTE-enabled version of the phone.

The LTE version is practically identical to the original, featuring 4.65in display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor and five megapixel camera on the rear.

There is no word from Google or Samsung yet, as to whether or not it will make this version available in the UK.

This phone was designed and made by HTC for the T-Mobile network in the US, and is the fourth in the myTouch family of smartphones.

Like the Photon Q from Motorola, the myTouch 4G Slide's standout feature is its sliding QWERTY keyboard. It also come with a 3.7in screen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and 768MB of RAM.

Again, it's unclear if the UK version of T-Mobile will launch a version of the myTouch 4G Slide on this side of the Atlantic.

HTC has suffered a pretty torrid couple of years and in 2012 press the reset button with its One series, with the flagship One X also available in a 4G version.

The One X features a 4.7in super LCD 2 display with a 1280 x 720 resolution. It also features one of the best cameras on any smartphone and is powered by Android 4.0.

The LG Spectrum was launched at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year, and it features a 4.5in screen with a 1280 x 720 resolution, giving it a huge pixel density of 326ppi.

Aside from the amazin screen, the LG Specturm features an 8 megapixel camera, Android 2.3, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM.
