“Wreck-It Ralph” and “Flight” are two highly anticipated movies that are coming out this week. Experts are predicting one of them will top the box office, but which one?
Disney's “Wreck-It Ralph” will surely appeal to kids and families thanks to the intriguing premise and the use of popular villains while “Flight” will appeal to older audiences and features Denzel Washington's star power. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it looks like “Wreck-It Ralph” will the top charts, predicting it will bring in $45 million at the box office.
“Wreck-It Ralph” will easily win the weekend at the box office thanks to 3-D ticket sales and opening in 3,600 theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Wreck-It Ralph” has been advertised heavily, has been receiving positive reviews and features the voices of John C. Reily and Sarah Silverman. “Wreck-It Ralph” will also feature cameos by popular video game characters including Bowser from “Super Mario Brothers,” Dr. Robotnik from the “Sonic” franchise, M. Bison and Ryu from “Street Fighter” and Clyde, the ghost from “Pac-Man.”
“Flight” is sure to be an awards contender and while Denzel Washington is a star, the Hollywood Reporter is predicting a modest $12 million take at the box office. “Flight” has been getting plenty of Oscar buzz and is also the first live action directed by Robert Zemeckis since “Cast Away,” which starred Tom Hanks. Zemeckis, director of “Forest Gump” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy, has focused on motion capture movies “The Polar Express,” “Beowulf” and “The Christmas Carol” since 2004. “Flight” will be opening in 1,900 theaters and had a $30 million budget so a $12 million take along with strong word of mouth can make the movie a success.
The Hollywood Reporter is saying the box office should be booming thanks to 300 theaters reopening in New York following the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. Disney's acquistion of LucasFilm and "Star Wars" should not be a factor or provide a bump at the box office for "Wreck-It Ralph."
“The Man With the Iron Fists” could be a sleeper hit. The martial arts movie directed by RZA, former Wu-Tang Clan member, has plenty of flair and could appeal to wide audience due to its stylized action. “The Man With the Iron Fists” also has Quentin Tarantino's name attached to it, lending more credibility that will appeal to hip audiences. The Hollywood Reporter is predicting $7 million to $10 million, which means it will make back more than half of it's $12 million budget.
Box Office Mojo is predicting the same outcome. “Wreck-It Ralph” will not have many strong contenders with “Hotel Transylvania” expected to fade after several weeks in theaters. Box Office Mojo is predicting “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Flight” to do bigger numbers, “Ralph” is predicted to bring in $51 million while “Flight” is predicted to bring in $16.5 million.
“Wreck-It Ralph” will take the top spot, “Flight”will be second, “Argo” at $10.7 million, “The Man With the Iron Fists” at $6.7 million and “Cloud Atlas” will come in fifth at $6 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
