As Hurricane Sandy makes its way up the East Coast on Monday, Maryland officials have reported the famous Ocean City fishing pier was destroyed by the storm and is "half-gone."

According to The Associated Press, officials confirmed the damage on Monday due to the heavy surf banging up against the pilings.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley told The AP the fishing pier is "half-gone."

The pier is located at the southern end of the Boardwalk, which has been under an evacuation warning since Sunday. Officials said Monday 100 to 150 feet of the pier is gone after the bait and tackle shop.

According to CBS in Baltimore, the damage happened last night as massive wind and rain destroyed the resort town. The report said officials said downtown Ocean City will be completely under water on Monday as Hurricane Sandy approaches. By early Monday, the dune line was breached and there is mass flooding over the fencing on the beach and the inlet.

The AP reported that some of the area at the boardwalk end of the pier is intact but covered in debris.
