Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring another striker to the club in January and has now been linked with a possible bid for Schalke forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
The Holland international has proven his ability throughout Europe, playing in Holland, Spain, Italy and Germany where he is currently viewed as one of the top strikers in the Bundesliga.
Huntelaar scored a total of 48 goals for Schalke last season, particularly catching the eye in European competition where he managed to score more than a goal a game with 14 strikes coming in just 12 matches.
He has yet to test himself in the Premier League and, according to the Daily Mail, Liverpool will offer him the chance to excel in England by making an offer when the transfer window opens at the start of next year.
The 29-year-old is currently in the last 12 months of his deal with the German side and could begin discussions with other clubs as early as January in order to sign a pre-contract agreement.
However, the Mail believes that Liverpool would prefer to make an outright offer in January as they have limited options in attack and are keen to bolster their firepower.
Rodgers has been rocked by the news that Fabio Boriini has been ruled out for three months, leaving him with Luis Suarez as the only fit senior forward at the club.
Liverpool have relied heavily on youth players this season, with Raheem Sterling and Suso particularly impressing, but there seems a need to bring an established forward to the club.
Huntelaar also has a record which proves he can excel at the very highest level, having been the top scorer in both Holland and Germany.
Even in his stints at Real Madrid and AC Milan, where his starts were limited and he stayed for just one season, he managed to show his clinical finishing as he scored eight goals in Spain and seven in Italy.
Huntelaar's record on the international stage is even more impressive, having scored 34 goals in just 59 appearances. Before Holland's disastrous Euro 2012 campaign, the striker had been in excellent form hitting 12 goals just in qualifying.
Schalke paid €12million for the striker back in the summer of 2010 but are unlikely to be able to demand a similar fee as Huntelaar would be available on a free at the end of the season.
