Rani Mukherji's comeback film "Aiyyaa" released on Friday opened to a dull start at the box office in India. The romantic comedy film opened to mixed reviews, but the performance by Rani and Prithviraj were highly praised by the critics.

"Aiyyaa" was released on Friday along with five other movies including "Bhoot Returns", "Makkhi", "Chittagong", "Login" and "In The Name Of Tai".

All the six movies opened to a poor response, but "Aiyyaa" got good response and witnessed a descent collection at the domestic box office compared to other releases.

The much-hyped movie was a big-budget film but it registered only 25 percent occupancy which is certainly disappointing for the makers.

As per early estimates, the movie raked in Rs 2.75 Crores on the opening day. The morning shows were poor, but it slowly picked up in the evening.

It collected some good figures in Maharashtra because of the Marathi connection in the film, but it failed in other parts of the country.

"Aiyyaa" is a romantic comedy film directed by Sachin Kundalkar and jointly produced by Anurag Kashyap and Viacom 18. The movie tells the story of a Marathi girl named Meenakshi Deshpande (played by Rani Mukerji) who falls in love with a Tamil artist Surya (played by Prithviraj).

Last week, Sridevi's comeback film "English Vinglish" had a poor start, collecting only Rs 2.05 crore on first day, but it picked up following good word of mouth. It collected ₹21 crore in the first week.
