The New York Jets have struggled recently, and they’re hoping John Cena can help them turn things around this weekend.
The WWE superstar will be at MetLife Stadium for the team’s Week 6 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. He will be the Jets honorary captain for the contest.
John Cena has wrestled in the WWE since 2002.
According to the WWE Twitter account, Cena will “lead the J-E-T-S chant.”
At the end of the 2011 season, Rex Ryan announced that players would no longer serves as team captains. Santonio Holmes and Mark Sanchez both held the title last season, but were stripped of the designation after they missed the playoffs.
Cena will be a part of the WWE’s biggest event of the year at MetLife Stadium in 2013. WrestleMania 29 will be held at the venue on April 7.
While having a wrestler as their honorary captain may not help them win games, the Jets may be looking to try anything, at this point. New York is 2-3 on the season with one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Sanchez ranks 31st in the league with a 66.6 quarterback rating.
Cena has also had his own problems of late. The biggest star in the WWE hasn’t been able to wrestle on “Monday Night Raw” for the past few weeks because of an injury. The 11-time WWE champion recently underwent surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow. He may miss the “Hell in a Cell” Pay-Per-View on Oct. 28, as a result.
The Jets and Colts will square off on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
