An aid to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi announced on Thursday that the Prosecutor-General Abdel Maguid Mahmoud was being removed from his current post and would instead become Egypt’s ambassador to the Vatican.

No specific reason was given, but the decision was announced following Wednesday’s announcement that Egyptian courts were clearing 24 people loyal to ousted president Hosni Mubarak who were charged with planning an attack against Mubarak’s opponents during the Arab Spring, Al-Jazeera said. Mahmoud was accused of presenting a weak case against them, and was widely thought to be a holdout from the former president’s regime.
