Free train rides would be offered to rail commuters in 2013 when two major lines and the Adelaide Railway Station close for upgrading and prepare for electrification.

The free commute covers both train rides and on substitute buses to cover the closed train services and station in January, timed with the closure of the Adelaide Railway Station from Jan 2 to Feb 3, 2013.

The Noarlunga line actually closes for a longer period from Jan 2 to September as the railway operator upgrades the section from the Oakland Parks to Adelaide. The Belair line closes for a shorter period until mid-2013 as the $110-million Goodwood junction is built. The junction would separate freight and passenger services and is expected to cut traffic delays on Cross Road by up to five minutes.

The Outer Harbour and Grange lines will continue to run during the closure period, while the Gawler line which ends at North Adelaide will provide free shuttle bus services to complete the journey of passengers to the Adelaide Railway station.

State Transport and Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon said that while the closure of the station and two lines would affect mostly passengers on the Belair lines, all train commuters would be impacted. He said the state is taking advantage of one closure to perform all repair and upgrading work at the same time to minimise the disruption as much as possible.

"We realise these closures will inconvenience commuters and we thank them in advance for their patience and understanding," Au.news.com quoted Mr Conlon.

"People have been very understanding that to get a better transport system, there must be some disruption . . . However, the government has decided to provide free travel for rail commuters affected by the month-long closure in recognition and appreciation of the way they have cooperated with the upgrade disruptions," he added.
