Chelsea struck three late goals to ease to a 4-0 victory over Danish champions FC Nordsjælland in Copenhagen.
Juan Mata scored twice, while Brazilian duo David Luiz and Ramires also got their name on the score sheet.
In their first Champions League campaign Nordsjælland were forced to play away from their home stadium but acquitted themselves well in what was a huge occasion for the minnows.
Chelsea got a crucial breakthrough, though, after 33 minutes.
Fernando Torres won the ball back deep inside opposition territory and after moving toward the edge of the box laid it off to Frank Lampard, who showed excellent awareness to send a perfectly-weighted pass to the onrushing Mata at the back post to slot past Jesper Hansen.
Nordsjælland remained in the game for much of the contest and maintained a good share of possession with their admirable short passing style.
However, three goals from Chelsea in the final 11 minutes gave the score line a flattering edge for the Champions League holders.
David Luiz started the flurry with a stunning strike in the 79th minute. The center-back showed once more that his qualities extend beyond far defending as he fired an unstoppable free-kick in off the near post from 25 yards.
The visitors did not have to wait long for a third. Chelsea twice benefited from fortunate ricochets on the edge of the box before Mata showed some excellent close control and finished low left-footed past Hansen for the second time in the match.
Roberto Di Matteo’s side added further icing to the cake as Ramires struck with just over a minute remaining. Torres did well to control the ball form the left and lay it off to Oscar who made his way to the byline before poking it past the goalkeeper and across goal for the grateful Ramires to tap home from just a few yards out.
