Teen bride Courtney Stodden has been called fake in the past, and now can add “fame whore” to her list of insults. The 18-year-old, who will be appearing with her 51-year-old husband Doug Hutchison on VH1’s new reality show “Couples Therapy,” is being denounced by her VH1 co-stars.
“Couples Therapy” premieres on VH1 Wednesday, and the Daily Mail is already reporting that the teen and her husband drew much animosity on set during shooting in early August.
The show focuses on Dr. Jenn Berman and her staff of therapists as they try to help celebrity couples who find their relationships in trouble. Alongside Stodden and Hutchison, “Couples Therapy” stars blogger Nik Richie and “The Bachelor” season 12 winner Shayne Lamas, “Real Housewives of New York” stars Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen, rapper Too $hort and Monica Payne, and R&B singer JoJo and Tashaunda Hailey.
According to the Daily Mail, Stodden and Hutchison’s co-stars believed that the couple took part in the show only to promote themselves, not to seek actual help. Nik Richie spoke to the Daily Beast to explain what exactly happened on the show. While all the couples lived in a mansion for three weeks with no television, no alcohol and no drugs, Stodden was allowed to leave the house because of child labor laws. Filming at the age of 17, Stodden was only allowed to “work” a maximum number of eight hours a day, meaning that while the rest of the couples were filmed around the clock, Stodden was allowed to “prance away in stilettos.”
In the first episode, Richie, who founded TheDirty.com, called Stodden “trash,” and a “fame whore” who “submits herself to my site half naked all the time,” reports the Daily Beast. After being separated from the controversial couple, Richie continued to bash them, going on to call Hutchison’s relationship with Stodden “child molestation.”
While the celebrity couples on the show seemed to scorn their marriage, Berman cleared things up, telling the Daily Beast that “my concern was that I don’t want to contribute to the exploitation of a minor. I felt that if it looked like it was heading in that direction, I was going to ask them to leave.”
Berman didn’t see Stodden and Hutchison as the others saw their relationship. “She is not a victim of this man,” Berman explained. “She’s very strong-willed and she’s older than her years in a lot of ways, and he’s younger than his in many ways.”
Despite Berman’s analysis of the couple, the others still found fault with their appearance on “Couples Therapy.”
“Showing your deepest, darkest times in life with Courtney Stodden sitting there twiddling her f***ing thumbs, it was definitely a challenging time in the first week,” said Lamas.
