Jesse Eisenberg is set to take on the theater world yet again. The Oscar-nominated actor’s play “The Revisionist” will open off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theater on Feb. 6 and run until March 31. Broadway.com is reporting that David Van Asselt is set to direct the production.
Jesse Eisenberg's second play, "The Revisionists," is set to debut off-Broadway. Eisenberg will star in the drama alongside with Vanessa Redgrave.
According to the New York Times, the 28-year-old, who penned the play’s script, will star as a science fiction writer who travels to Poland in search of inspiration. The trip allows him to connect with his elderly cousin and holocaust survivor (Vanessa Redgrave).
Last year, Eisenberg wrote and starred in the off-Broadway play “Asuncion,” which received mix reviews. Though some critics thought that the play was uneven, many of them noted that Eisenberg showed potential as a playwright.
“As a writer, Eisenberg displays bravery, flashes of wit, and the beginnings of a real satiric sense,” wrote Vulture’s Scott Brown, “But the play he’s written is meretricious, superficially “provocative” nonsense -- a young playwright’s practice swing.”
“Slender play by actor-turned-playwright Jesse Eisenberg lacks focus and doesn’t add up to an awful lot,” said David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter. “But Eisenberg has a knack for presenting his characters in ways which keep things intriguing.”
“Asuncion” was a hit with audiences. The play ran for an additional three weeks after it proved to be a box-office success.
Since his breakout role in 2002’s “Roger Dodger,” Eisenberg’s career has taken off. From his scene-stealing turn as a sullen teenager in “The Squid and the Whale” in 2003 to his lauded take on Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in 2010’s “The Social Network,” the New York native has proven to be one of the most promising young talents in Hollywood.
Eisenberg was last seen in Woody Allen’s “Two Rome With Love” and is set to star in Richard Ayoade’s “The Double,” as well as Louis Leterrier’s height thriller, “Now You See Me,” starring Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo and Michael Caine.
